How To Beat The Credit Crunch When You Have A Baby

Digg This Stumble This Email This

The credit crunch is here and if you’ve got a new baby you’re more than likely feeling the monetary pain somewhat.

Sadly I can’t hand you out thousands of pounds each to make life a bit easier but what I can do is make some suggestions to help ease the pain.

1. Use reusable nappies instead of disposable nappies

If you use disposable nappies by the time your baby is potty trained you’ll have used as many as 6000 disposable nappies and spent around £750.

Alternatively if you use real reusable nappies, you’ll only use around 25 and spent less than £185.

That’s a saving of £585!

Reusable nappies are available online from Bambino Direct and Kiddies Kingdom

2. Buy Second Hand From Ebay

If you’ve not got your cot or pushchair yet then it’s worth taking a look at Ebay because you can bag yourself a real bargain - when I looked there were a huge amount of strollers for less than £10!

3. Use Plastic Bibs Instead Of Cloth Bibs

Plastic bibs just need a wipe down after meals and they’re ready for use again saving you time washing cloth ones and money having to buy multiple bibs for when one is in the wash.

Plastic bibs are available at Mothercare, Babyworld and Bambino Direct

4. Involve Family and Friends

If you’ve got family and friends that want to buy things for your baby the easiest thing is often just to let them buy a toy or item of clothing.

However they want to help you as much as your baby so why not produce a list of baby essentials you need then when someone asks you’ll have a better idea of what you really need.

5. Make Your Own Baby Food

Buying baby food is a great time saver but can be a real drain on your finances. Making your own at home will save you a fortune and with a Beaba Babycook it won’t take long as it steams, blends, defrosts and re-heats the food!

The Beaba Babycook is available from Mothercare.

Have you got any baby moneysaving tips? If you do I’d love it if you’d share them with us all below.

Buying second hand can definitely help save money! Craigslist is a great place to look too!

I don’t know if they have something like it in the UK, but your local Freecycle list is a great place to get FREE baby stuff. Just today on my local list, people offered a box full of children’s books, a carseat, a ton of little girl’s clothes, another car seat, toddler shoes, and a box full of bottles. Check out freecycle.org.

Jenna, I’d completely forgotten about Craigslist and now I think about it Gumtree is a good place too.

Sarah, we do also have Freecycle in the UK and what could be better than getting it for free!!

Thanks for the great suggestions both of you.
